Saint John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was an influential English churchman, theologian, and poet who transitioned from a prominent Anglican leader of the Oxford Movement to a Roman Catholic cardinal and Doctor of the Church.
Born in London on February 21, 1801, Newman was educated at Trinity College, Oxford, and became a fellow and tutor at Oriel College, as well as the vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford. During the 1830s, he led the Oxford Movement which sought to renew the Church of England by emphasizing its ancient Catholic roots. Following intensive study of the early Church Fathers, Newman concluded that Roman Catholicism represented the true continuation of the historic Christian church. He formally converted to Catholicism in October 1845 and was ordained a priest in Rome two years later.
Returning to England, Newman established the Oratory in Birmingham and dedicated much of his later life to education and writing, including serving as the first rector of the Catholic University of Ireland. He authored numerous profound works, and was appointed a cardinal in 1879 by Pope Leo XIII. There are two officially authenticated miracles attributed to the intercession of St. John Henry Newman, which led to his beatification in 2010 and his canonization as a saint on October 13th 2019. The Beatification Miracle: Jack Sullivan (2001) The Canonization Miracle: Melissa Villalobos (2013)
Cardinal Newman was beatified in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI and canonized as a saint in October 2019 by Pope Francis. His feast day is celebrated on 9th October.
